以下是《小王子》(The Little Prince)的英文原文节选:
Once when I was six years old, I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing. In the book it said: "Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion."
I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked something like this: I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them. But they answered: "Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?"
My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. So then I made another drawing of the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:
The grown-ups' response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter. I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.
So then I chose another profession, and learned to pilot airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.
Thus I have lived my life alone, free, and without ties; and it has always seemed to me that this was the way that wise men ought to live. But with one exception. I have had a great many friends in my life. And, of all these, I have lost contact with only one. I lost him on an asteroid, B612. It is such a little planet that, with a three hundred and fifty degree power telescope, one might see it from the Earth. One night, I have watched it, with my little telescope, and have said to myself: "Somewhere there is a man whom I know well. When he is happy, he has a star that never goes out."
Then, without making any further efforts on the memory of the grown-ups, I said to myself: "Grown-ups are certainly altogether extraordinary." But, if I had to choose between them and the little prince, I should have chosen the little prince. The grown-ups called me "the little prince." And I certainly was a prince. The planet that I came from is Asteroid B612. I have good reason to believe that it is the smallest planet in the entire solar system. That is why I have good reason to be called a "little" prince. And I have good reason to be very proud of my planet. It is just big enough for me. I have no room to walk about on it. I must stay where I am hopping. But to be perfectly truthful, it is not very tiring because, after all, it is small enough to jump from one end to the other in three steps. When I get up in the morning, I take three leaps to the right, and when I go to bed in the evening, I take three leaps to the left. In that way, I visit the whole planet in a day. And I am not tired in the least.
